Getting started with a quad
You have made a great choice!
Welcome to the adventure of UAV flight and the fun of learning about all aspects of building these very serious toys. What makes this pursuit so good is the fact that you can decide where you want to be in the general scheme of things. If you enjoy just flying around, great. And if you want to get to perform autonomous flight, you can keep going on to achieve this. The purpose of this site is to help you try as many or as few different ways to fly as you feel like trying. The purpose of this site is to provide you with the knowledge to make informed choices.
The way we will go about getting the information you need organised, is to start from the basic components, then add some talk about airframe builds and information about transmitters for you to use as and when you need. Remember, we will not be providing you with specific Quad (or UAV) build information, what we will do is provide you with as much practical knowledge about building UAVs and component choices as we can.
So what do we need to cover?
OK, this is what we need to do to get in the air
- Learn about motors
- Learn about speed controllers (ESCs)
- Learn about batteries
- Learn about transmitters
- Learn about airframes
Remember, the actual control hardware is your choice. The information to guide you through the assembly of the control hardware is all out there and we will have lots of links to the many control platform build instructions.
Other helpful skills
You will need a few tools, some basic assembly knowledge and a little knowledge of electronics. While we do intend to add links to video tutorials and other resources to help with skills building, we ask that you bear with us while we concentrate on the most important items to get things going with the site.
So what do I need to get started
[No matter what control system I choose]
- 4 x Brushless motors
- 4 x Electronic Speed Controllers
- 1 x Battery (or two - 11.4v LiPo)
- 1 x Transmitter & Receiver
- 4 x Propellers (2 Clockwise & 2 Anti Clockwise)
